I am not a legal expert of any kind. So in my non-legal opinion, everyone crying about Joe Biden pardoning Hunter (including CNN) is ignoring context. I don’t normally post about stuff like this outside my stories but I feel like Democratic leadership is tripping over itself when this isn’t hypocrisy.
People will say “but he sAiD he wOuldN’t pArDoN hUnTeR” and if it had been a reasonable court proceeding, he wouldn’t have.
He says it here. They went above and beyond what would have happened to anyone not named “Biden” (with as much impact on the White House as Hunter had - which was none). They tried to break Hunter and his sobriety to bring embarrassment on the President.
Someone brought up that the clemency goes all the way back to 2014. Yeah, because that’s the point that anti-Biden folks are going back to. Hunter joined the board of Burisma holdings back then, and also was discharged from the Navy Reserves that year due to drug use.
If they had any evidence of him doing anything of international importance they would have brought that in the indictments.
Instead they charged him with tax evasion for taxes he already paid back, and for possessing a gun while having drugs in his past.
If his last name wasn’t Biden, Libertarian meme accounts would be praising his name and rushing to his defense.
I’m not saying he shouldn’t have been brought to court - but multiple legal experts have stated that he got way more than anyone without his last name would have gotten under the same accusations (below is a screenshot of an article from June 2023).
To sum up:
1. If you’re still crying about Hunter, you got fooled by propaganda.
2. If you have been crying about Hunter and haven’t said a word about Charles Kushner (pardoned in 2020 for crimes from 2005), or Trump consistently refusing to turn over his tax returns (we only saw 6 years when the House Ways & Means committee forced their release and we still don’t know how much Trump owes to other entities or corporations) then you probably don’t actually give a damn about justice or rule of law.
3. President Biden should take note of what Qasim Rashid and others have said - use this time to pardon others unfairly targeted, like so many victims of mandatory minimums and our New Jim Crow prison system. Go beyond that and eliminate unfair student debt and codify abortion access and rights. Make it that much harder for Trump to destroy American freedoms for anyone that doesn’t look like him.
